Bromine - Fun Fact Friday!
Bromine, the most commonly used sanitizer for hot tubs, is naturally produced by predatory sea snails in the Mediterranean. Ancient civilizations used these snails to dye their fabrics purple. However, because it was an extensive process only the most affluent Romans could afford it, therefore giving the color purple high cultural significance. The dye was also greatly prized because rather than fading in weathering and sunlight it actually became brighter!
